JIMI HENDRIX …….. Happy Birthday!

“Pencils Are Forever” 1998 by William Davis

A TRIBUTE TO JIMI HENDRIX – 78 YEARS ETERNAL TODAY!

James Marshall Hendrix – November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970

00individual was foot-cruising down on Main Street in Venice in the spring of ’98 and outside a bar at the south end of the strip an apparently homeless dude, a bit older than he, was sitting on the pavement working away on a large drawing.

00 wanted to acknowledge a fellow artist’s work so he asked to see it, the artist turned it around and there was this really nice pencil drawing of Hendrix. 00 immediately asked him if he would like to sell it and he said yes. 00 offered him a very decent price and after they agreed he said that he wasn’t completely finished and could 00 come back in about 20 minutes. 00 said sure and knew right then that whatever this man’s life was about, he had the talent and background of an artist – and the curse of a true artist’s dilemma, “When is a piece of art finished?” Leonardo Da Vinci said, “Art is never finished, only abandoned” and in this case he would abandon it in 20 minutes.

Once 00 was back, he had finished, signed and dated it.  He drew it in pencil on the back of a 14” by 20” cardboard advertisement for the L.A. Weekly newspaper – 00 loved it and it’s always been very special to him.

So to celebrate the birthday of Jimi Hendrix 00 wanted to share this original hand drawing of Jimi by the artist who drew it, William Davis.

Along with all the other millions of Hendrix fans planet-wide they all wish Jimi a very Happy Birthday!

Strange, Beautiful.

There have been many artists who came and went before their time and single-handedly changed history leaving reverberations for generations to come;  Jimi Hendrix was definitely one of them.
No other musical artist has even come close to defining “psychedelic” through their music as Hendrix has and “Third Stone From The Sun” goes beyond psychedelic – it’s hallucinogenic!

Volumes have been written on Jimi and we have all been “experienced” so the focus with this post and this list is strictly about the Psychedelic Factor – and this song is the Bible.
First off, the melody, it’s just beautiful – that melody alone has a timeless quality that could serve as the basis for a hit during any decade.  But here it serves as the fluid force that drives the psychedelic trip through all of the alien world landscapes and time warp navigations through space and time.
Secondly, the subject matter and lyrics contain too many cool quotes. And thirdly and beyond, there are so many truly hallucinogenic sounds and feelings that Jimi manifests in this song that it is literally packed with psychedelia.

Back then, this song spoke directly to us Psychedelic Kidz; distorted guitar, distorted voice / vocals, ethereal passages, crunching, wailing outer space sounds these were all a musical extension of an acid trip.
When the psychedelics hit, all manner of reality begins to move in and out of your peripheral view as well as your physical senses becoming heightened; sound, movement, touch, thoughts.
I remember one day/evening I dropped acid and walked with a friend around our neighborhood, Jimi was accompanying us on our journey as his trailing swooshes of electric sound – heard on this record – were in the air, right there to match the trailing and underwater movement of everything around us that wasn’t nailed down, well, OK, even the houses seemed to groove a little, but the point is that “Third Stone From The Sun” is thee best example of the perfect balance for a psychedelic song; you can totally groove and enjoy it on so many levels that the psychedelic influence becomes the song.

Jimi had an affinity for the ocean and for outer space – and obviously beyond both in a very spiritual sense – his leaving will always be sad for us, but I believe that he really needed to move on. I saw this thought explained by a black brother, a friend of Jimi’s from England, and I paraphrase, he said nonchalantly that because of Jimi’s desire of always wanting to evolve that possibly the night he died, no matter what the real circumstances were, that he stood on the threshold of life here and life somewhere else, and just said, ”Cool, I’ll try this.”  That sounds more like someone who was not afraid to die but had an underlying excitement of what was possible for him on the other side.  I can fully relate.

Hendrix could have easily filled the Top 13 Historic & Classic 1960s Psychedelic Songs alone, but to be fair to all he’s only on the list twice.

“Third Stone From The Sun”
is 00individual’s choice in a three-way tie for #1.

.

Trippy Note: The first time I heard the Jimi Hendrix Experience “Are You Experienced” album was on an 8-track tape in the back of my buddy’s ’52 Chevy, he had bought it because he was into R ‘n’ B and thought it was an new English soul group.  He had a reverb unit set up in the back of his car which made every tape sound like it was underwater – cool.
So when he turned up the volume and we heard this LP and “Third Stone From The Sun” for the very first time – I became “experienced” right there and then on Compass Drive in Westchester “the Home of LAX”.
Groovy!

“1983 …” is beyond belief – Jimi is beyond belief – I wouldn’t want to live in a world where Hendrix’ music wasn’t a huge influence – I thank the Rock Gods for bestowing the soulful pleasure of Jimi’s music in my lifetime.

Jimi’s sound is invigorating and powerful; it gives me strength in hard times and super-strength in easier times. This track literally lifts my soul every time I hear it – it is magical.

When this double album of pure pleasure was released I was seventeen and being a Pisces, a water sign, this selected gem with its sweeping majesty and immersion in psychedelic undersea otherworldly vibes is not only the perfect track to represent Jimi in full-psychedelic mode, but it pleases my cosmic aquatic desires.

After listening to “Electric Ladyland” several times I could feel the difference from his first two LPs – these songs had a strange sophistication – I felt like my appreciation for music was raised with Electric Ladyland.
For one thing, I was dying for Hendrix to do an entire album side song, or at least a long extended track – and he did with “1983 …” and “Voodoo Chile”.

Jimi’s obsession with the mysteries of the unknown is a recurring theme. Whether in the realms of the sea, altered states of consciousness, the outer limits of space or with the exotic and elusive muse, (which is a recurring theme unto itself) Jimi had the ability to take us with him – to fantastic places we had never been.

I believe that IF Jimi had continued to live on in this plane of existence that the jazz exploration would have been inevitable – but also as evident anywhere on this track, his abilities would also eventually include some super-amazing soundtracks and film scores – and from there, …?

In any case, I plan on seeing and hearing Hendrix again – and I won’t be late.

“1983 …” cannot help but bring back great memories of nights and days getting high to the super-groove of the double-LP playing as the ambient and dominant sound of life.

I CAN HEAR ATLANTIS FULL OF CHEER!
