. . . for those of us fortunate to be at the right place; in the Hollywood Palladium, and at the right time, 8 PM on May 12th, 1973, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars gave a Rave Up of a concert performing the insane set list above for their Farewell Tour for 3,500 Hard Core Bowie Fanatics.
00individual was back a bit to the right of stage (about 20 deep from the Stones’ 06-09-1972 “Exile on Main Street” tour Palladium Position, which was about center right 10 or 12 deep from the stage) but then again with only a 3,500 SRO capacity, any view is excellent.
Suffragette City’s “Hey, Droogie don’t crash here” was a lift from the vivid zeitgeist imprint of Anthony Burgess’ “A Clockwork Orange” film version directed by the master Stanley Kubrick and with an electronic score by Walter Carlos (who eventually took Bowie’s gender-bender act one better by “changing” to Wendy Carlos) at the height of his/her career. This is culturally-important because Bowie opened with the fanfare from A Clockwork Orange soundtrack which was perfect for Bowie’s current image.
. . . and coming off the Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars U.S. debut five months earlier, we knew this was going to be a historic concert – and it was. Second Best of the ’72 to ’75 era, and here’s why . . .
. . . by 1973 we were all Official Psychonauts, exploring mind-blowing realms of truth, fun, awareness and insanity through natural and chemical catalysts. And so, after years of historic music by historic groups in many splintered genres 00individual was on the verge of becoming a bit jaded with the whole scene, just bein’ honest, as always.
Let’s face it, it had been an unimaginable ride; the greatest of the greats had recorded and performed the most diverse and creative Rock ever, and therein lies the point, when you start to reach the top of a creative era expectations rise and soon they become unattainable heights.
But then a Rock ‘n’ Roll Alien came on the scene. Bowie was the real deal, he was in control and created a persona, that whether live or on a record, was alien. His music was like a psychedelic drug and we immediately felt renewed. A definite shift had taken place.
The celebration of gender-bender Rock was not that removed from Elvis’ hip-shakin’ innuendo or Jagger’s feminine struts and pouts on stage. Bowie did all that as a Rocker Alien entity – that, set Ziggy apart from everyone.
Bowie’s persona as Ziggy transcended mere camp, he put a believable human face on a sexual alien Rocker and sang of dramatic movie-esque moments and themes that would evolve into exquisite Rock anthems and otherworldly ballads.
The Spiderweb-solid band of Woodmansey on drums, Bolder on bass and Ronson on lead were the perfect Hard Rockin’ aliens to back Bowie – his Best Band Ever.
Gotta love that Alien and those Spiders.
Now, decades later, we all know the truth, Bowie was and is a true musical, theatrical genius, an artist in media and business who was always at the crest of the “next wave” and way ahead of all of his contemporaries – a leader, an innovator, a chameleon, an artist, a lad insane.
