EXPERIENCE ROCK HISTORY and the COUNTER-CULTURE’S COSMIC UNITY
The MONTEREY INTERNATIONAL POP FESTIVAL June 16-18, 1967
The Monterey International Pop Festival was the brainchild of John Phillips of “The Mamas and The Papas”, and legendary super producer Lou Adler – timed perfectly to kick-start the historic Summer of Love cultural Vibe.
The cosmic level of Rock Pop Counter-Culture History that was produced at Monterey served as a cultural debut of the future, not only for the populace, but more importantly for the Counter-Culture itself. Monterey Pop was the beginning of what could be, and what was to be.
There was so much happening, evolving, and being quickly assimilated in 1967 that the intricacies of what was really happening – a generational ideological music-oriented liberating socio-political drug-fueled movement that would change society forever – had become a multi-layered lifestyle.

The Monterey International Pop Festival’s peaceful sucess introduced the Summer of Love . . .
and while considered trite today, Scott McKenzie’s Top 20 Hit, “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)”, was heartfelt and was highly representative of the Vibe; the emergence and cosmic feeling of empathy and love and rock ‘n’ roll.
The Vibe is a hard feeling to describe. Imagine waking up in the morning and going about your daily business only there is a subtle feeling of excitement coming from within. This feeling was unique and ubiquitous and became part of every level of life. It had no judgement or appropriation of class, it existed in the knowing recognition of another like-minded Brother or Sister who was also exploring life through an entirely new viewpoint with clarity, priority, vision, truth, reality, and empathetic Brotherly Love.
Arguably the catalyst for all of this stemmed from the enlightened experiences of Marijuana and LSD. The unique part of the Vibe was that stoned or straight, longhair or shorthair, a symbiotic bond was known and felt among those whose world had opened up to many new ways of thought and to an acquired awareness. And when a good Vibe is transferred, Cosmic Unity spreads.
This was exemplified by the emerging Counter-Culture’s celebration of music and performers in a peaceful, joyful outdoor environment was communal, tribal, respectful, appreciative, enjoyable, fun-loving, and empowering. These were emotions that were obviously felt to varying degrees by everyone at Monterey, and the feelings continued at concerts and events thereafter, serving as evidence of the Unity of Music, People, and Rock ‘n’ Roll that re-inforced the Vibe.
THE SUMMER OF LOVE!
The Main Attraction of the Summer of Love was centered in and around the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco with Psychedelic Rock bands; The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Quicksilver Messenger Service creating an allure that was magickal. The West Coast Sound included a similar scene in Los Angeles centered in and around the Westside and the Canyons; Topanga and Laurel. The Doors, The Byrds, The Seeds, Love, and Buffalo Springfield pioneered Folk Rock and Psychedelic Rock.
Although the Summer of Love had inadvertent negative repercussions, especially in the Haight, it historically represents the idealized moment in time when individuals joined in peace for alternative lifestyles not burdened by status, materialism, and consumerism; instead they appreciated the simple things in life like Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll, Equality, Civil Rights, Freedom of Speech, enjoying life, and Love.
