In honor of being the first album released in January of 1970 on the list of Top 79 Historic & Classic 1970s Rock Albums, I present: (drum roll) FRIJID PINK!
Here’s a solid hard rockin’ “90% heart and 10% sweat” group who could’a should’a been huge.
Some bands just got it right from the start and these guys did: with their own distinct sound that was powerful, sleek and yet raw. One listen to their searing version of “The House of the Rising Sun” shows their ingenuity and unique style by making this classic all their own. Many artists have covered it but none took it to the level of FRIJID PINK.
If their version of “The House of the Rising Sun” was the only righteous song on the LP it would still be major, but that’s not the case, every cut is cool – but a fave of mine, (“People just don’t understand yah) – (the World at the) “End of the Line”, comes flying off the turntable with another FRIJID PINK classic hard rocker. Another stone fave is “Boozin’ Blues”, this blues number hurts just to listen to it – it’s that good.
Tom Beaudry deserves a lot of credit for his street-wise, soulful, honest and made for Rock voice plus he literally owned “Yah” – said in the coolest heartfelt way. I really liked drummer Richard Stevers style, kinda Moonish and syncopated and he gets a creative workout on “End of the Line”. Guitarist Gary Ray Thompson shreds and distorts massive haunting sonic licks which defined the FRIJID PINK sound and bassist Tom Harris deals the heaviest fuzz tone bass and works it.
So here we have a band that can definitely play the Blues, can Rock as hard as anyone, and can totally re-invent a classic – sounds like success.
FP had a whole lot of potential, but unfortunately broke up soon after their second LP (Defrosted) and the magic was gone.
And herein is a lesson for all of you potential bands: if you find yourselves with a single on the Top Ten of Billboard’s Top 100; buck up, stick with it, work out your creative differences, rise above and if there’s chemistry at all, put it to work and shelve the egos. After a few successful albums you’ll all have earned the right to express yourselves individually.
It’s too bad, as these guys were on the rise and so insanely popular in their home town of Detroit that Led Zeppelin opened for them at Detroit’s Grand Ballroom!
Treat yourself to some truly exceptional Rock by one of the first bands to burst forth into the new decade and ignite the ‘70s:
