CAN A NEW ROCK MOVEMENT BE BORN TODAY?
h this new series of posts for 2016; HEADS WANT TO KNOW, 00individual delves into issues and topics of and about the Rock World and Music/Culture in general.
He has removed the word “inquiring” from the well-known catch-phrase, as Heads already are.
In the first half of the last century the term, “Heads” was a shortened term for eggheads – as in intellectuals. This term changed with the ’60s focus on awareness and expanded consciousness through the use of LSD, Marijuana, and other mind and sensory altering gifts to a deeper meaning of Head, and not the Deep Throat kind.
Being a Head reflected a cosmic intellect, an adventurous spirit willing to explore psychedelic regions successfully where previous Heads would not tread.
In 00individual’s serious drug days and years (about a decade and a half) almost all true “Heads” were the coolest and the most together, as the term stood for something, a certain recognition of one’s hierarchy within the Culture.
Smoking weed and taking acid did not necessarily qualify one as a Head. That came with a level of unspoken respect from info from on high.
Whether Local, National, or Worldwide, or just within their Tribe, being a Head was revered.
With an open mind, 00individual extends this term to any person, experienced or not, from any age group, and from any decade who possess the self-evident qualifications to be proudly-known as a Head. You know who you are.
So, with that in mind here’s what Heads Want To Know: Can a New Rock Movement Be Born Today?
irst let’s quickly define a Rock (Music) Movement – there are many sub-genres that never reached the “movement” status but still had an impact, however, to address this question properly 00individual will reference actual history-making movements.
Remember that each successive decade benefited from the previous decade(s) Movement(s) and those genres carried on as recognizable categories until, as we will see, progressive genre-mashing erased lines of distinction.

the ’10s; Pop Rock, Pop Rap, Pop Dance, Rap Rock, Rock.
the ’20s: Pap Rock.
00individual respects and appreciates aspects of all music, however he could not resist the schadenfreude-inspiring bottom-line data above for the spontaneous set-up of the last merge:
Pop + Rap = Pap – which by definition is; “something lacking solid value or substance”.
By the 2020s 00individual’s Pap Rock prediction may be spot on, unless of course it has already happened, which of course is of personal opinion. Or is personal opinion just the result of precision force-fed media focu$?
Back to the question; based on what we know from nearly 90 years of Music Movements and over 60 years of Rock Movements; what are the prospects?
Can a Rock Movement Be Born Today?
It seems as though musically every genre possible has been explored to its extent, and now it seems that with so many blended genres that a new Movement would just be an amalgamation or highlight of everything before. With hits based on historic Rock riffs, this technique of sampling opens up decades of treasures to pluck off of trees in other people’s yard.
A new Rock Movement cannot be a technological improvement, it needs to be the real deal from an individual, band, group, or groups that can rival any of the above decades’ genres’ major influences.
The barren state of Rock is evident with the die hard Foo Fighters as the last Rock Band standing. 00individual is fully aware of the legion of Rockin’ Bands nationwide/worldwide that carry the torch, but they are not a Movement – they are a continuation of proud and dedicated devotees of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
In the end, it seems that when every style and genre has been blended, fused, isolated, re-born, retroactively resurrected, re-energized, re-interpreted, re-constructed, altered, sampled, and even delivered with a new creative twist, it will still be the same old wine in a brand new bottle.
Which is fine – just as long as there are Rockers out there and their music Rocks then there will always be a possibility. And since Rock and Roll Forever Will Stand there is hope.
00individual is an optimistic Rocker – someone, somewhere, right now is planting the seed for a New Rock Movement To Be Born.
Wait for it, hear it comes.
