LED ZEPPELIN – LED ZEPPELIN II
October 22, 1969
Today marks the 45th anniversary of the birth of the monster: Led Zeppelin II.
00individual would like to celebrate by relating what it was like to be 18 years old in late 1969 – and hearing this album for the first time.
While Led Zep’s first album will always be 00individual’s favorite LZ album and is also up there in the Best of the Best, Led Zeppelin II was an equal monster as it was the sonic partner to our strong young libidos.
A girlfriend of my girlfriend, which by association became my friend, used to call all of the Heavy Rock, “Ungh” music; male POV “fucking” music, and well, she was right, all of the most well-liked and renown Rock songs have definite expressive surges of Rock Power that translate to sexual drive and creative thrusts – figuratively, and literally. Besides, that’s the impetus of Rock ‘n’ Roll – Rockin’ is Fuckin’ to either great background movin’ and groovin’ music – or – creating the same sexy moans and rhythmic thrusts only with music created by and between the two, or more, “Rockers”.
Which leads us right into this “Ungh Masterpiece’ – Led Zeppelin II.
Led Zeppelin began 1969 with their debut album and then ended ’69 with Led Zeppelin II – they owned 1969! And that was a massive accomplishment as 1969 was the Second Best Year for Rock Album Releases (and in retrospect possibly #1)
00individual could create an endless list of life-landmarks that were experienced between these two epic album releases that were the epitome of a free-form lifestyle that was so cool that he forgot he was working – as even his job was as trippy as life was at the time.
Dedicated Rockers to this site have heard it before, but these rare statement’s about 1969 always bear repeating as a time-stamp on an incredible era; 00individual’s life consisted of: a beach pad shared with two best friends, a car, a motorcycle, an art department job, two girlfriends, all the weed and drugs imaginable, Rock History’s Classic Concerts to attend and Historic Classic Albums to hear and experience as they were released – and the Balls to the Wall, Pedal to the Metal sounds of Led Zeppelin II to magnificently celebrate the close-out of the Best Decade Ever.
There are two things that are true in this life; Nothing Is Easy and, Timing Is Everything.
In the case of timing, Led Zeppelin II arrived with perfect timing to add a whole new level of Rock that was thunderous, orgasmic, invigorating, sinewy and soul-searingly hot – and was exactly what we needed to match the sheer virility and freedom of being young in ’69. Whew!
LZ II is a time travel album, whenever it’s heard, it is impossible for 00individual not to be immediately drawn back to a time when life was nothing but fun – Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll! ! !
