EXPERIENCE ROCK HISTORY!
Let’s start backwards . . . sometime in late ’67 L.A.’s Top FM stations KMET and KLOS played The Moody Blues “Nights In White Satin”. 00individual was truly enthralled. This track is one of a dozen or so that somehow brought 00individual home, to a place so familiar yet completely foreign that it became an emotional experience.
00individual’s first experience with thius kind of audip-sensory connection was as a little five year old Rocker who literally bonded with Gogi Grant’s “Wayward Wind”, that song and voice still captivate and create an unknown yearning in my heart.
The Seeds’ “Pushin’ Too Hard” was far less meaningful, but stronger in a memory way, as if heard a 100 times before.
But then both fused in the Album Track Gem, “Nights In White Satin” – there was something so strange and magical about knowing that a track/song is new, really new, maybe not even officially released, yet you know without a doubt that it is just an old personal favorite that finally made it through the veil and manifested in the Physical Plane in the sound that you remember, such as, “Nights In White Satin“.
There is a philosophy that states that all ideas, concepts, inventions and basically all creative “thoughts” already exist on and within an accessible level. Some say these are in a massive hall awaiting for eventual Physical Plane manifestation.
History is rife with races to the Patent Office for inventions created nearly simultaneously half a world apart. Were these inventions coincidental accesses into the Hall? If this, or any similar concept exists, then maybe that’s an off-shoot explanation of Deja Vu or certainly for epiphanies and muses and prophetic predictions – people naturally have the ability to access creative thought, some more than others, and some are able to manifest those ideas into reality. In any case, we know what we know and no one can take that from us.
The Moody Blues were rumored to have been offered a deal to make a rock and roll version of Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony for Decca’s new label Deram to promote a new recording technique, however the Moodys instead took this unique opportunity of the use of a full orchestra conducted by Peter Knight to create an original concept portraying the typical times and events within a 24 hour day.
The many touches, themes, melodies, songs, tracks and just plain wonderful moments throughout the entire album scored high points for all involved; they were working on all eight cylinders of creativity. Bravo!
Personally, 00individual loves the spoken word interstitials, they really set the Moodys in a class of their own and they used that technique throughout most all of their albums.
1. The Day Begins
2. Dawn: Dawn Is A Feeling
3. The Morning: Another Morning
4. Lunch Break: Peak Hour
5. The Afternoon: Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?) aka Tuesday Afternoon
6. Evening: The Sun Set: Twilight Time
7. The Night: Nights In White Satin
DOFP opened the door for the Progressive genre that was just around the corner with serious classically-trained Rock groups. The Nice, King Crimson, Yes and many others followed, but The Moody Blues were the only ones to carry the torch beyond DOFP with seven solid album releases.
In a very strange but eclectic level The Moody Blues really created their own genre.
After DOFP the Moodys continued with their “symphonic” Mellotron and with lyrics dealing with life’s mysteries and with a distinct and powerfully-tempered sound that branded the Moody-style.
They weren’t Rock, not Pop, not even the Progressive genre they originated, nor the seminal explorers of Classical Rock that emerged within the Prog-Rock era of the ‘late 60s and early-to-mid ’70s – The Moody Blues were and are an enigma in Rock, and Pop, and Prog and . . ..
00individual would be remiss in his duties if he did not take this opportunity to state The Moody Blues Best Album Ever: “To Our Children’s, Children’s, Children” – Whew! Proof of their incredible undefined influence on Rock, Music, Spirit and Class – Impeccable. A rare height of Soul-Stirring Sound.
