Since the last two posts contained somewhat heavy subject matter; let’s pull a 180.
In 1966 00individual was fifteen and in the ninth grade, and as the documented evidence proves, he spent his time wisely in class coming up with cool Rock Band names, rather than taking notes.
(#31 Gary Galaxy and his Interplanetary Band)
While most of these Rock Band names were juvenile, created by a juvenile, they also reflected the trend of actual bands’ names that were popular at the time, like Paul Revere and the Raiders, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Cannibal and the Headhunters, and ? and the Mysterians.
A few of the obvious ones did become actual bands like; the Weeds, the Savages, the Local Motives, the Reign, The (The) and the Zoo.
There were the existential ones; the Quirks of Fate, the Pointed Curves, the Reasons Why, the Irresistible Urge, and the Prisoners of Society and the rebel ones; the Freaks of Nature, the Grubs, the Musical Outcasts, the Worst Band Ever, the Back Alley Bonecrushers and the Boothill Rejects.
Today, with the thousands and thousands of bands in existence this 48 year old list of band names is not all that clever when you consider that nearly every kind of combination and double entendre possible has been used by now; but this list was way before all of that and still has an innocent joy about it that defines the spirit of the those times.
My days of doodling in class paid off though, at nineteen I was able to get a righteous job soon after graduation in 1969 in an art department that was sponsored by the government.
I landed the job based solely on a single piece of Psychedelic Rock ‘n’ Roll doodle art that I had done in class on a notebook divider in 1968. This one doodle ignited a 45 year professional art career.
See about that artifact here – and/or click on mini doodle below for enlargement.
