EXPERIENCE ROCK HISTORY!
APHRODITE’S CHILD – 666 – June 1972
By 1972 00individual’s Rock tastes were becoming eclectic and Euro bands like, Nektar, Golden Earring, Can, Faust, Sensations Fix, Neu, Amon Duul II, Tangerine Dream and Aphrodite’s Child, as well as the Cosmic Courier label bands like Ash Ra Tempel and Popul Vuh were providing some really interesting and irresistible Rock and synth-laden Progressive music.
Aphrodite’s Child founder and eventual Academy Award Winner, Vangelis Papathanassiou became one of my all time favorite artists – I own import virgin vinyl releases of nearly all of his albums and this Vertigo label double LP, “666” was my first encounter with this Greek Rocker.
Like with my complete Vangelis collection, I collected Tangerine Dream from their earliest import releases as I was addicted to their music also.
With the “Aphrodite’s Child” bold graphic front cover art, 666 was an immediate eye-catcher and the biblical/satanic numerals “666” were as potent then as now.
I’ll leave it to others to sort out the biblical aspects (as many have) – for me they were just well known themes used as a basis for Vangelis and company to fully cut loose with some major creative Rock!
Aphrodite’s Child were really very much aligned with the Who at this time with a “concept” double album, extremely creative compositions, soulful unique lead vocals by Demis Roussos, infectious beats, hard Rock to soft ballads, soaring guitar and even a sexual climax! And all done with an invigorating sense of adventure and enjoyment – kinda like the Who – only Greek.
00individual is aware of the occasional, whether intended or not, “camp” track title announcements; a minor objection compared to the truly incredible creative Rock on display here – styles and moods and genuine emotional upheavals flow throughout these two chunks of righteous rockin’ vinyl!
Released a year before Pink Floyd’s DSOTM concept album and eighteen months before the Who’s Quadrophenia concept album; 666 was a rousing, refreshing and highly-creative contribution to the Prime Concept Album Era.
Aphrodite’s Child: Vangelis Papathanassiou – keyboards and all compositions (far right),
Demis Roussos – bass and vocals (middle), Loukas Sideras – drums and vocals (left),
and Anargyros “Silver” Koulouris – guitar (not pictured) joined AC for “666”.

I’ve listened to 666 many times over the decades and it only gets better and richer –
a real creative gem of a era, of a band, of an important place in the Rock History World!
An interesting painting adorns the inner gatefold – not sure of its reference to the album’s concept; chaos, maybe?
Anyway, like the double album’s music; just another piece of intriguing art to enjoy!
Vangelis’ next release was his solo, “Earth”
a truly awesome album that can transcend and transport your psyche to mystical realms.
