MOONTAN – GOLDEN EARRING – July 1973
40 years ago this month Golden Earring injected a huge much-needed shot of solid Rock ‘n’ Roll into our lives!
The tantalizing original outside cover Moontan Knockers were just a tease for the inside Moontan Rockers.
Side one of this LP rates extremely high on the “Top Side One Albums of All Time” – each of these three extended tracks are truly exceptional; I mean Air Fist Pumpin’, Dashboard Drummin’, Head-Nodic, Body Rockin’, Howl-at-the-Moon(tan) songs!
I get goin’ just hearin’ the first few beats of “Radar Love” – one of the grooviest rockers ever; a stone classic that feels like a super-charged ’50’s rebel rocker heard through the radio of a retro-future supercar on the Hard Rock Highway of Love!
Back in the early ’70s we all knew a “Candy” who was “Going Bad”; sometimes she was a friend, sometimes someone closer – either way this molten hot wah-wah track melds into …
“Vanilla Queen”, a perfect Rockin’ side-ender that shows off a perfect song-ender as the last three minutes are one of the best “fanfare theme reprises” of any Rock song!
With side two GE’s versatility shines brightly on “Big Tree, Blue Sea” a rousing track with a touch of jazzy flute that is followed by the psychedelic exploration of “Are You Receiving Me?” – another GE epic!
Not all Rock bands can create solid six to nine minute songs without a lot of “noodling” which is why GE’s talent is so strong; they can move effortlessly from Hard Rock to Psychedelic transcendent passages and then into music that is exclusively theirs and never lose the listener’s interest, in fact, GE’s songs keep you on the edge of your seat riveted to the beat and eager for where they go next.
All songs by Barry Hay and George Kooymans, except where noted
- “Radar Love” – 6:24
- “Candy’s Going Bad” – 6:12
- “Vanilla Queen” – 9:20
- “Big Tree, Blue Sea” – 8:13
- “Are You Receiving Me” (John Fenton, Hay, Kooymans) – 9:32
Golden Earring’s “Twilight Zone” is getting a lot of airplay these days but my favorite non-Moontan song is “Ce Soir” a driving, slick hot, kick-ass bolero Rocker that tells the classic tale of a Rock ‘n’ Roll star’s self-fulfilled prophesy – a song that has great potential for a Rockin’ thriller murder mystery movie.
GE’s endurance in the Rock World is truly remarkable and rare as they retain most original members and still perform – true Rock ‘n’ Roll Stars that should be historically-heralded for their superior talent, staying power and dedicated Rock lifestyle.
